Superman and Lois has been off to quite the start this season, and we have plenty more in store for us! After some fleeting moments of happiness in the last episode, we now return to the relentless drive of Lex Luthor as he continues his quest to find his daughter and exact vengeance on the Man of Steel and his family. Will Lex manage to break through their defenses and get what he’s after, or will our heroes finally put an end to his schemes? Let’s dive into the episode below to find out!
Seventeen years earlier, Lex Luthor and his wife, Erica, discuss their pending divorce. Lex is emotionally distant, struggling to connect with his family due to lingering trauma from his childhood, especially involving his mother. Though Erica yearns to reconnect with him, Lex's past has created barriers he can't easily overcome. She eventually leaves, and we shift to the present, where Lex remains determined to find his estranged daughter, Elizabeth. Discovering that Superman is alive, Lex vows to return to Smallville to confront his long standing enemy.
Meanwhile, on the Kent Farm, Clark and Lois debate the threat of Doomsday being unleashed in the wake of Superman's resurrection. Clark, ever hopeful, seeks a peaceful resolution, though Lois harbors doubts. Elsewhere, the Kent brothers are helping friends prepare for an Independence Day celebration, complete with a plethora of fireworks. In a private moment, their friend, Denise, reveals her knowledge of their father’s identity, expressing deep gratitude that he has returned. As Lex approaches Smallville by car, the Man of Tomorrow flies toward him, setting the stage for an imminent showdown.
Tensions run high as the Last Son of Krypton and Lex Luthor confront each other face-to-face. Lex demands answers about Superman’s return, but Clark urges him to let go of his vendetta. He expresses genuine remorse for Lex’s pain and pleads with him to stop targeting his family. Unmoved, Lex remains fixated on revenge for the years he feels were stolen from him. He issues a quiet but menacing threat before Clark flies off, and we transition to another flashback.
Years earlier, Erica’s divorce lawyer prepared to strip him of custody of his daughter with plans to relocate to the United Kingdom, far from the shadows of Metropolis. In the present, Jonathan and Jordan discuss Denise’s knowledge of their father’s secret identity. Jonathan is called away to handle an emergency, leaving Jordan to pick up Candace in an unexpectedly awkward moment. Meanwhile, Lois and Jonathan travel to the UK to confront Elizabeth, who is pregnant and hiding from her megalomaniacal father. Lois tries to persuade her to cooperate, but Elizabeth’s hesitation is understandable given the danger.
Clark learns of their trip to the UK and discovers that Lex is about to become a grandfather. Lois proposes that he take refuge at the Fortress of Solitude, but Clark refuses, unwilling to leave his family unprotected. Meanwhile, in the kitchen, Candace and Jonathan discuss his recent disappearances, only for Lois to interrupt, asking for Jonathan's help again. At the Fortress, Clark confides in his mother’s hologram, expressing his worry over how to defeat Doomsday if he resurfaces.
Using advanced Kryptonian technology, Clark reviews footage of his previous battle, hoping to uncover any mistakes and strategize a better approach. Elsewhere, in his Smallville hotel room, Lex learns about Lois’s conversation with his daughter and heads to the Smallville Gazette to confront her. Just as he interrogates the seasoned reporter about Elizabeth’s whereabouts, Elizabeth herself appears, descending the staircase into the newsroom.
At a diner, Elizabeth and Lex sit across from each other in tense conversation, while Clark and Lois observe from a distance, nervous about the potential fallout. Clark’s mind is occupied, doubting whether he could withstand another confrontation with Doomsday. Lex attempts to ask Elizabeth about her situation, but she resists, while unpacking the pain of growing up as a Luthor. However, she admits that she doesn’t want to view him as a monster, prompting Lex to reveal he never intended for her to see anything false in him. A flashback illustrates Lex’s genuine love for his daughter, emphasizing that Elizabeth was the best part of his life. In the present, Lex expresses his desire to be her father again, but Elizabeth remains cautious and uncertain.
At the gathering, Jonathan wants to come clean to Candace about his secret life, but she walks off, frustrated by his evasiveness. Meanwhile, back at the diner, Elizabeth returns, and Lex earnestly defends himself, insisting that he tried to be a better parent, determined to break free from the cycle of abuse and neglect that marked his own childhood. He expresses regret for not being there for her and a deep desire to be present now. Moved, Elizabeth finally accepts his offer to reconnect.
In another flashback, a younger Elizabeth is seen pleading to stay with her father in Metropolis. Her mother, Erica, storms off, warning her to recognize Lex’s true nature. Meanwhile, on an empty highway, Lois activates a tracking device to draw Doomsday to her location. Hearing the signal, the Kent brothers sense the danger unfolding. Jonathan takes flight, racing to join his mother as Doomsday appears, ready for a fight.
Lois, though visibly anxious, approaches Doomsday with unwavering courage, hoping to reach the creature’s remnants of humanity. For a brief moment, it seems to respond, its monstrous form quieting as Lois’s words resonate. Meanwhile, Lex and Elizabeth enjoy a rare moment of connection at the diner, but their peace is shattered when Elizabeth realizes Lex has remained in Smallville out of a vendetta against Lois Lane. Confronted, Lex faces an ultimatum; abandon his path of vengeance or finally embrace what he has. Consumed by bitterness, Lex chooses revenge over love. Heartbroken, Elizabeth walks away, declaring that she wants no part of him in her or her child’s life.
In a flashback, we see a younger Lex dropping Elizabeth off at school, only for the Big Blue Boy Scout to confront him about a crime he didn’t commit. As Superman insists on taking him into custody, Lex swears vengeance, promising never to forgive Superman for disrupting his life. Back in the present, Lex walks away in resignation, leaving Clark to realize that not every conflict can end in reconciliation.
At the Fourth of July celebration, Jonathan and Candace finally make amends after he, with Jordan’s support, shares the full truth about his secret life. As fireworks light up the night, Lois reassures Clark that he doesn’t need to hide at the Fortress of Solitude; they are stronger together. The episode closes as Doomsday, having been reasoned with by Lois, breaks free of Lex’s control and vanishes into the night, leaving Lex without his master weapon.
Overall, the fifth episode of Superman and Lois season four explores the raw emotions and fractured bonds of its characters in a concise, yet coherent manner. Lex Luthor's desperate attempt to reconnect with his daughter, Elizabeth, reveals a vulnerable side beneath his ruthless exterior, while highlighting his fixation on revenge. With its immense emotional complexity, “Break The Cycle” builds tension through relationships rather than flashy action, setting a powerful tone for the season ahead.
Comments
Clark is not going to be happy with what Lois did with Doomsday behind his back.
The focus is on Lex through his rocky relationship with estranged daughter Elizabeth in the present and their flashbacks.
Elizabeth Henstridge directed and guest starred in this episode as she did well on both. I doubt we will see Lex’s daughter again after this.
