Haywire Recap

Here we are again Superman and Lois fans! Time for another brand new episode! Friendly reminder, due to a Covid-19 precaution, the show will go on a seven week hiatus after next week. But fear not, you can still get your Kryptonian fix over at Supergirl.tv where we'll be covering Kara Zor-El as she fills in for her cousin. If the last three episodes have shown us anything it's that this show is about family and this show is doing things in the Arrowverse differently. That trend continued tonight as Clark, now assistant coach to the football team at Smallville High, ran drills with his boys while also working with General Lane on the safety of the world! Here's what stood out to us:

  1. Six Years Ago: We open with some kind of military chase where it turns out that Morgan Edge is chasing meteors. One crash site looks like it has alien pods in it. Could they be Kryptonian pods? We cut to today where Morgan is meeting with the Mayor and Kyle Cushing. They are at the High School football game. General Lane shows up and discovers that Jordan has powers. Jordan makes a game winning play which causes the suspicion. At the farm, General Lane calls out Lois and Clark but the couple shut it down. The military is terrified of Superman and they note when his priorities change. He isn't being seen in the skies anymore and so the Military is transferring some of the most dangerous criminals out of Metropolis. Superman doesn't agree to babysit the transfer so General Lane offers to stay at the farm and "pitch in". At the Gazette, Lois has written a scathing piece on Morgan Edge but the mysterious woman from last week that has heat vision shows up. She is already aware of the article somehow and notifies Lois that to publish that article would be in breach of her previous contract with The Daily Planet.
  2. Running Drills: Coach Kent is running plays with Jordan and Jonathan. Jonathan is feeling the pain that his brother is a superstar at the very thing that he had. Lois asks Clark to head to the town hall to ask hard hitting questions at the meeting. Lois heads to the quarry to confront Edge. Lois is able to get Edge off balance a little bit with counter suits. They both are circling each other that there is something in Smallville that is drawing them there. Will Edge figure out why the Kent family is in Smallville?
  3. Killgrave: Thaddeus Killgrave is in transport and is able to use his intelligence to create an explosive that will get him free. In the meantime, Jonathan notes his team mate isn't doing well. He follows him into the bathroom where his arm vibrates so fast it blasts his cast off. Clark heeds Jonathan's warning and investigates but he is called away to confront Thaddeus. It is too late and Killgrave escapes. General Lane asks the kids not to distract their dad. When they do, lives are at risk. Way out of line for General Lane to do. At the town meeting, Edge gets the town's exclusive rights to The Shuster Mine. Lois agrees to go get drinks with Lana after telling Clark that she is feeling pretty low on Clark's priority list since he wasn't able to attend the meeting chasing Thaddeus.
  4. High School Party: Jordan and Jonathan head to the high school party to check up on the boy with the arm issue. Lana and Lois have a nice girls night. Sam Lane is working on finding Thaddeus and gives Clark grief when he shows up to help but Clark sets him right. They get a hit on Killgrave's location and Superman heads out. It's a bit of a trap as Killgrave has a weapon that attacks Superman's hearing. At the party, the boy's injury speeds up and he breaks a table. Jonathan and Jordan go after him to make sure he is alright.
  5. Battle in the Park: Thaddeus has Superman pretty well trapped in the park in Metropolis. Just then Jordan, noting what Sam said to them, tries to use his limited new strength to help the boy who is moving so fast now he looks like he could be the Flash. Jordan is thrown off and not knowing what to do, Jonathan calls out for his dad. Superman hears them in Metropolis and performs the super clap to knock out Thaddeus and bystanders. Superman calls in Sam's team to recapture Thaddeus and provide aid to the bystanders. Superman superspeeds to the boys where he takes the ailing boy high into the atmosphere where the air is thinner and he can pass out for his own safety.

In the final wrap up moments we see the Kent family discussing the issue. We find out that something in the explosion from the pilot triggered the boy's meta-human development. He will be going to a special school now where they can treat his issues. Clark asks why the boys waited so long to call for him and General Lane comes clean about what he said to the boys. Lois throws him out of their house for it. Clark throws a special date night for Lois to show her that she is always his priority. The barn is adorned with candles and Jordan is able to get to get Lois to the barn for the surprise. General Lane thinks he is losing Superman's attention so he begins a new project, 7734, a contingency plan for if they can't control Superman. Morgan Edge enters the mine which he now has access to in Smallville and asks his assistant to punch through into a cave. They find a type of Kryptonite that would seem to give humans power?!

I liked this one better than last week's teen whine episode.

Like Leslie Larr (Lesla-Lar), X-kryptonite has its origins in Supergirl, so it's fun they are incorporating or repurposing Supergirl lore into Superman. Similar to how Supergirl borrowed from Superman.

In fact, the X-kryptonite gave Kara's super cat Streaky its powers. Could S&L introduce their take on Krypto (Superdog) via the X-kryptonite plot? I posted the topic in Forum also, but I don't see much forum activity yet.

S&L dropped to a .2 demo this week, as did Flash, but still over 1M total viewers and likely to be CW's most watched show in total viewers again this week.

Update... it looks like Walker may have this week's most SD viewers on CW.

Really liking this take on the Man of Steel. But is this show *really* part of the Arrowverse? From production design to aesthetics (e.g., red heat vision), it feels like its own thing.

That may be a good thing. I think this and Stargirl will rejuvenate Arrowverse. I will really miss Supergirl, but I think overall the "verse" needs a little shake-up.

Agreed. Stargirl is set on another Earth, though.

S&L feels like it is as well. I guess my question should have been "Is this set on Earth Prime?"

I do think that was the intent as there was a crossover with Batwoman planned. But, I think leaving it to itself is probably best, so it can do its own thing... which honestly, looks better than the rest.

I like the way Superman always gets out of trouble with different super stuff, like the super clap. I thought the lighting in this episode was poor. And I never new that Lois Lane was an Alcoholic. Social drinkers don't do shots at a bar with wine chasers. I wonder if she's a friend of Bill W's.

Much much better than last week's episode as we see Superman juggling between two places. Up until this episode, the Kent family were tight until there was tension with General Sam Lane.

Balance is something the show is aiming for here with a bit of everything.

Project 7734 (hELL) is going to be interesting. I was surprised Gen. Lane was on good terms with Superman when the show started. It seems we will now be seeing the General Lane I was expecting.

If you were to punch those numbers into a handheld calculator and turn the numbers upside down you get the word hell...which is what I think a now turning General Lane is going to make Superman's life.

I think the haywire referred to Thaddeus Killgrave's weapon and his attitude...he sounded like Ted Kaczynski (the unabomber) with slurred speech...and the boy with that vibrating arm and speed.

A good episode overall.
