The End and the Beginning Recap

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? It's actually the return of Superman and Lois on The CW! The final chapter is upon us, and the Man of Tomorrow certainly has a lot on his plate. The prior season left off with Superman going into space to take down the ferocious Doomsday while his family and friends watched in fear back on Earth. The conclusion to said battle is finally here, and we're all super excited to see what the final season of Superman and Lois has in store for us!

The episode opens up with a recap of the season three finale, and we cut to large fragments of the Man of Steel's cape floating aimlessly in space. Back on Earth, Lois and her sons, Jonathan and Jordan, discover that General Sam Lane has been kidnapped and likely in the clutches of the nefarious Lex Luthor. Lois orders Jordan to use his enhanced hearing to search for her father.

Meanwhile, Lex and his associate, Amanda, are discussing the former business mogul’s potential return to LuthorCorp, as it's been a whole month since he got out of prison. Despite some reservations, Lex is mainly concerned about finding his estranged daughter, Elizabeth, who he hasn't heard from in many years. The archenemy of the Last Son of Krypton has ultimately taken up residence in a dilapidated apartment across the street from the Smallville Gazette.

Despite Jordan's best efforts, tracking down his maternal grandfather with his abilities proves to be harder than expected. Jonathan tries to reassure his brother about their father and his chances of survival, but the aspiring hero has his doubts regarding his father's fight against such a ravenous beast. As she worries for her husband, Lois has a flashback to when Clark revealed his secret identity to her many years ago. Despite some initial reservations, the love between Lois Lane and Clark Kent is palpable as the revelation only strengthens their bond.

Returning to the present, Superman is giving his all in a fierce battle with Doomsday, the two exchanging blows with survival as their only focus. Doomsday is a formidable adversary, but Superman is determined to come out on top, even with his foe having regenerative abilities beyond comparison. The next day, Lex visits Lois at the Smallville Gazette, and the seasoned reporter demands to know where her father is. Lex plays coy, which leads to a heated discussion between two lifelong enemies. To say that their exchange ends tumultuously would be an understatement.

We cut to another flashback where Clark returns to the Daily Planet after another clash with Lex and Intergang, which leads to a distressed Lois. Despite her worries, the Man of Tomorrow reassures his newlywed partner that everything will be fine and that he’ll always be by her side. Elsewhere, General Sam Lane is being held captive by his former romantic partner, “Gretchen”, and laments that she's working for such a vile person and how their relationship was a facsimile of something genuine. Even with his attempts to reason with her, General Lane is able to escape and successfully incapacitates “Gretchen”.

In the serene town of Smallville, Jonathan tries to lift Jordan's spirits, but his brother remains worried about their grandfather’s condition. As they share a meal, Lex unexpectedly arrives and speaks with the twins. He explains that everything that’s about to happen is justified, as Lois had previously imprisoned him for a crime he didn’t commit, causing him to lose contact with his daughter. The scene ends with a flashback to Lois preparing to reveal the story incriminating Lex to the public. Despite his pleas, Lois is determined to see him behind bars.

After being knocked unconscious by Otis, General Lane is once again at the mercy of Lex and his affiliates as he's shoved into a grave and buried alive by Otis. Another flashback highlights the birth of Jonathan and Jordan as Lois has a small seizure while in labor with the twins. Clark stands by, despite his initial insistence on heading to the Fortress of Solitude to help with delivering the twins, and Lois eventually gives birth. Back in the present, Jordan is able to pick up on the voice of “Gretchen”, and he and his mother go to save General Lane.

Jordan is able to save his grandfather's life and they immediately rush him to the hospital. General Lane insists that despite everything that has happened, the Man of Steel will rise again and take down Lex Luthor once and for all. However, Superman is still at arms against Doomsday, but even after unleashing a powerful blast of heat vision, it appears the esteemed hero has finally been defeated once and for all. The Last Son of Krypton has finally met his match and paid the ultimate price.

Jordan senses Doomsday’s return and quickly flies his brother and mother to the location where the monster is headed. Doomsday descends to Earth, dropping the lifeless body of the once-powerful superhero at the feet of his family. Devastated beyond belief, the trio openly mourn the loss of not just a hero, but a father and husband. Meanwhile, Doomsday presents Superman's heart to Lex and Amanda, a grim symbol of his defeat. As the episode closes, Lois looks toward Lex’s hideout while her sons cry uncontrollably over their father’s death.

The season four premiere of Superman and Lois delivers one powerful emotional punch, masterfully blending high-stakes action with heartfelt moments. The return of Superman’s iconic battle with Doomsday is both intense and gripping, showcasing Clark's relentless determination, even in the face of impossible odds. The episode also shines in its quieter moments, as Lois’s unwavering hope for her partner's return adds a heartfelt layer to the epic confrontation. Lex Luthor’s presence as a calculating and deeply wronged villain adds intrigue and complexity, with his interactions with Lois fueling the tension.
The final moments, as Superman's body is delivered to his mourning family, leave viewers stunned and emotionally invested, setting the stage for an unforgettable conclusion to the series. In conclusion, "The End and the Beginning" stands out with its blend of action, raw emotion and deep character development, solidifying its place as a phenomenal premiere for the final season of Superman and Lois.

I’m glad that they picked up right where last season finale left off.

Elizabeth is a made for tv version of Lena Luthor.

They’re not kidding about this Lex Luthor being more grounded than past incarnations.

Best version of the Doomsday fight.
